Is My Nut Allergy Genetic? I have been dealing with a nut allergy for my entire life. It started whenever I was very young and although at the time it was extremely mild, it eventually grew into something that was more severe. There were several times whenever I ingested food which was cross contaminated with different type of nuts that I had reactions which I thought I was not going to get through. That is why I was very careful whenever I had my own children, to watch if they would have a similar allergy, themselves. One of the ways that I approached the situation cautiously is that I never allowed my young children to come in contact with nuts in any way until they were old enough to tell me if they were having a difficulty. Even then, I was still cautious with the amount that I fed them because I knew how severe of a problem this could be. I also needed to be cautious because of my own allergic reaction and out of fear that by having this type of food in the house, I would be affected negatively. I did not want to necessarily deprive my children of the opportunity to have this type of food but it was also a judgment call on my part to limit their exposure to it at a very young age. Fortunately, my children are perfectly fine and they have grown up and eat nuts and nut products on a regular basis. None of them have any problems but I was surprised to find out that genetics are often at the root of allergic reactions. Although it is not always the case, things like this do tend to run in families for one reason or another. The simple fact of the matter is, it does happen but medical science is unable to explain why. If you have a problem with a nut allergy, you should likewise be cautious with your children, especially when they are very young. Feeding them nuts if they are allergic to them can cause such a severe reaction that they could die. Don't take chances like this otherwise you may end up with a situation on your hands that you certainly don't want to have. It is a good idea for you to find out if your children share the same allergies as you do but it is also a good idea for you to wait until they're old enough to let you know if they are having a problem or not.
